Have you ever been scrolling through Instagram and then you get the sinking feeling that your life just doesn’t compare. Why aren’t you traveling the world? Why doesn’t your skin glow? Why isn’t your house perfectly clean and decorated? I have been there.
Up until recently I seriously struggled with comparison. It's been something I've struggled with my whole life, and it has a way of completely shutting me down. It doesn't matter how great things are going in my life or business.. as soon as I allow myself to compare to others who seem to have "more" I come spiraling down.
You might think I’m crazy for saying that, but there is so much power in the thoughts we have about others. If you are looking at other people feeling envy of where they are or what they are doing with their life, it’s likely because you want something they have. And guess what, you have the potential to live that life. You are FULLY CAPABLE of whatever you set your mind to.
Up until recently my strategy was to avoid comparison. I would limit my scrolls on social media and zero in on my life. Whenever something stirred up the ugly feeling of comparison, I would avoid it at all costs. But hiding from your feelings is no way to live, so I decided to shift my perspective.
The next time you feel comparison angst creeping in, pause. Take a step back and consider if part of your calling is similar to what this person is doing or what this person has.
Realize that they are doing is calling out to something you see in yourself.
Don’t get down on yourself because you aren’t there YET. Instead, figure out what you can do today to move towards the life you want.
That sinking feeling doesn’t have to be labeled as jealousy or comparison. Think of it more as your soul crying out that you are beyond capable of achieving anything you put your mind to weather it be filling your closet with fashionable clothes, starting a business, getting in shape, or traveling the world. You inner dialogue is saying, “Hey, you have everything it takes. It’s time to take action.”
That said, taking action is often the hardest part. We get these feelings and then we don’t know what to do with them or how to act upon them. Like I mentioned earlier, I used to try avoiding them at all costs, but avoiding them doesn’t help move you closer to your goals or the life you want.
So instead, when you get those feelings, embrace them. Act on them. Ask yourself, “What can I do today to move myself closer towards that dream life?” Many small steps will add up to big changes in your life.
One of the greatest pains in life is that of unused potential….And the sad truth is, if you never figure out what you really want to do, or are fully capable of… you will probably feel lost, stuck, and unfulfilled your whole life, and life is way too short for that.
